The eReader Revolution!

July 15th, 2010 · News, Tips

Apple sold its one millionth iPad, just 28 days after the device was introduced.The Consumer Electronics Association projects that 5 million eReader units of all stripes will be sold this year, up from 2.2 million in 2009. Apple’s iPad is just one of a dozen new devices on the market. This past January, two dozen companies that either make or deliver material to eReading devices attended the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) — the industry showcase of cutting-edge technological gadgets. It was such an increase from the previous year that a special eBook section was created for the first time. The age of the eReader has dawned.

ecause of the fluid nature of a non-PDF eBook (the text re-flows to fit the size of the screen) it’s difficult to preserve specific formatting. The formatting languages do not yet have the ability to resize images and graphics accordingly. Here is a rough list of formatting that is not supported when converting your document into and ePub or AZW format:

* Tabs
* Tables
* Extra returns between paragraphs
* Fonts other than Times New Roman, Garamond and Arial
* Type larger than 14 points
* Columns
* Multiple text or paragraph styles within the body

For a more in-depth look at formatting for non-PDF eBooks, check out the Smashwords Style Guide.

AdSense in Your City

July 14th, 2010 · Affiliate Networks, News, Tips

This summer and fall, the AdSense team is coming to visit you! In an effort to work more closely with their publishers, they’ve launched the AdSense in Your City program. As part of the program, members of the AdSense team will be traveling to five cities this summer to hear directly from you, as well as to share best practices, top optimization tips, and new products.

Last month, they kicked off their first AdSense in Your City event in Mountain View, California. Sixty publishers came to Google to learn how to make more money with AdSense, to meet members of the AdSense team, and to get to know each other. Recordings of the sessions are supposed to be made available online at some point, however, so don’t worry too much if you can’t make a meeting or aren’t issued an invitation. This program should just represent a welcome opportunity for AdSense publishers to interact with Google representatives and become better-informed.

Outlook gets Facebook integration

July 13th, 2010 · Marketing, News, Social Media

Microsoft has integrated Facebook into its Outlook e-mail system in its latest move towards the social web. Users of Outlook will be able to see the Facebook profile photos of their e-mail contacts, plus their news feeds, status updates, pictures uploads and wall posts. Currently people will only be able to view Facebook pages rather than update them via their e-mail account reports the BBC

Microsoft is really excelling at integrating third partie applications. Their building of their cloud infrastructure to make Facebook, Twitter et all seemless across all Microsoft properties from XBL to Zune to Windows to Windows phone, of course security and privacy implications are still of a big concern.

Consumer Reports can’t recommend the iPhone 4

July 12th, 2010 · Marketing, News

Consumer Reports engineers have just completed testing the iPhone 4, and have confirmed that there is a problem with its reception. When your finger or hand touches a spot on the phone’s lower left side—an easy thing, especially for lefties—the signal can significantly degrade enough to cause you to lose your connection altogether if you’re in an area with a weak signal. Due to this problem, we can’t recommend the iPhone 4…

You know, if Microsoft tried to pull half the nonsense Apple has in the past year or so, there would be an out and out consumer revolt, but since Apple is seen as the “good guys” they can get away with it. Any other computer product sold is expected to work properly and people would demand to be able to run any software they wished(Flash, non-Apple apps, etc). But for some reason Apple just gets a pass and it`s called incredible brand loyalty.

Lazy Sunday – Audi A9 Concept Car

July 11th, 2010 · Lifestyle

The Audi A9 uses nanotechnology to ‘heal’ any unsightly little scratches, not only keeping the aesthetics exceptional, but also preventing rust damage from those tiny nicks you can’t be bothered to touch ups. Not only that, but Garcia has also adapted the technology further and predicts that it could be used to create and electronic painting system that could sweep over the car and change it’s colour….

The A9’s design was partially inspired by the stunning architectural style of Santiago Calatrava’s buildings in “La Ciudad de las Artes y de las Ciencias” (The City of Arts and Sciences) in Garcia’s hometown of Valencia, because there is more to life then work…

Google quietly invests in Zynga

July 10th, 2010 · News, SEO, Social Media

The investment was made by Google itself, not Google Ventures, say our sources, and it’s a highly strategic deal. Zynga will be the cornerstone of a new Google Games to launch later this year, say multiple sources. Not only will Zynga’s games give Google Games a solid base of social games to build on, but it will also give Google the beginning of a true social graph as users log into Google to play the games. And I wouldn’t be surprised to see PayPal being replaced with Google Checkout as the primary payment option reports Techcrunch

I think it’s important to note that while Google does indeed collect data, it also provides a range of useful services, however Google is in the business for profit. The way they make a profit is by advertising on their services. The reason they’ve been so successful at this is the fact that they can target their ads very well, which is what the data they collect is used to improve…

How to Build Trust Online

July 9th, 2010 · Marketing, News, SEO, Social Media

Human beings are social creatures that seek out companionship and relationships. Our map of reality can be viewed as a series of concentric circles which include the most trusted relationships and those who are in our hearts at the very center. We crave trust. Without it, we would be consigned to a world where we must examine everyone’s actions with suspicion and assume that they are working only for their purposes and not ours says Tim Ash at ClickZ

I found the article The Four Pillars of Building Instant Trust Online by Tim Ash to be very helpful when building a plan of action to increase consumer trust in your website. How can you incorporate the four pillars in your website?

Democrats push for new Internet sales taxes

July 8th, 2010 · Marketing, News

The halcyon days of tax-free Internet shopping will, if Rep. Bill Delahunt gets his way, soon be coming to an abrupt end. Delahunt, a Massachusetts Democrat, introduced a bill on Thursday that would rewrite the ground rules for Internet and mail order sales by eliminating the option for many Americans to shop over the Internet without paying state sales taxes.

My 2 cents; make it like the European Union they faced a pretty similar problem, with what is called VAT, because almost each and every country has multiple different tax rates with widely varying rules. The solution already used there is to charge electronic and mail order sales to consumers within the European Union the rate of the VAT (sales tax) of the SELLER’S location. Sales outside of the EU are exempt from tax (helps exports), as are certain cross-border business-to-business sales, and end ot it. Keep it simple, stupid!

EU looking carefully at Google allegations

July 6th, 2010 · News, SEO

The European Union’s antitrust chief said Wednesday he is looking “very carefully” at allegations that Google Inc. unfairly demotes rivals’ sites in search results. Joaquin Almunia said in a speech that the EU investigation is still at an early stage but that officials were aware of the “importance of search to a competitive online marketplace.”British price comparison site Foundem and French legal search engine ejustice.fr complained to the EU that they were ranked low in Google searches, claiming that this may be because they offer rival services to Google.

I think it is just a matter of time till the US will do the same and take Google to task for putting Adwords ads at the top of the search results, because there can’t be anything more anti-competitive then doing this. Yahoo and Bing won’t have a problem but Google most certainly will.
